Structural and Thermal Performance Assessment of Shipping Container as Post-Disaster Housing in Tropical Climates

Shipping Containers (SC) are a viable option as temporary or permanent housing for disaster victims due to their modularity, strength, and availability in large quantities around the world. While SCs alternative has been extensively explored, few studies have focused on structural thermal performance of tropical monsoon climate. This paper aims contribute better knowledge SC building construction by (1) investigating when subjected variety loads, including gravity, earthquake, very strong typhoon, (2) assessing hot humid The case Leyte, Philippines, hot, humid, typhoon-frequented region, is considered this study. To meet objectives, two were combined build single-family house. First, strength SCs, effect cuts openings, investigated using finite element analysis. Second, condition was compared four models with different insulation materials: no insulation, PE foam (R-12), slightly higher (R-13 fiberglass batt), high (R-49 batt) through energy simulation. concludes that inherently can withstand wind earthquake. Stresses openings minimized cuts/openings placed far from corner posts. On other hand, increasing R-value did not improve indoor SCs. More work needs be done making thermally comfortable climates.
